Giving Back: 5 Eco-Friendly Hobbies to Do With Kids
It’s never too early to start your kids on the path to environmentally conscious living. In fact, chances are your children will love the opportunity to learn more about their Earth and how they can protect it. One of the best ways to integrate these lifestyle choices is by partaking in some hobbies that have green-living at their core. Here are some of our favorite eco-friendly hobbies to do with kids—even picking up one can make a difference!
Beekeeping
Beekeeping is a terrific way to help the environment and give your children a passion for helping out the little guys. Though in this case, the little guys are bees. This hobby will help children remember that there is always a way to help those in need. Before you begin, make sure that you and your child sit down and educate yourselves on the beekeeping process, and then make sure you get the proper equipment before you start. It’s something the whole family could fall in love with!
Composting and Gardening
We’ve paired these two hobbies together, because we think they’re most effective when partnered. Composting with the kids will help them realize that even when we think the initial use of something has passed, there’s always another way to use it. Create a compost pile as a family, then hit the dirt and get digging! It’s a great way for the kids to get outside and have them see that from hard work comes fruition.
Volunteering
You may not get to do too much volunteering at the moment, but once the current COVID-19 situation has been resolved, volunteering will be vital. There are so many ways to get the kids involved with volunteering and giving back—not just to the environment, but to the community as well. Set up some volunteer time at an animal shelter, a resource center for the homeless, or anywhere else that you and the kids may feel called to go and help.
Cooking
You’re probably wondering how cooking is an eco-friendly hobby. But if done with the right foods, it absolutely can be! If you bring the kids into the kitchen and focus on creating healthy and sustainable meals, it’ll be an eco-friendly hobby that they can use the rest of their lives. Better yet, you can use some of the things you plant in your garden in the dishes themselves.
Power Patrol
This isn’t exactly a hobby, but it is in an activity and mindset that the kids can use for the rest of their lives. All you need to do is teach them some of the ways we tend to waste power and energy in our day-to-day lives—leaving lights on, keeping things plugged in, taking long showers. The kids can act as the power patrol, finding ways the whole family can cut down on electricity, power, and water use, in order to live in a more sustainable home.
Remember, kids want to play a part in the environment. All you need to do is give them some sort of direction, and these eco-friendly hobbies to do with kids will provide just that. These will give them the starting point they need to follow through with this mindset for the rest of their lives!
